George
John DeTellis was born on June 11, 1961 in Cambridge, Massachusetts
to a pastor and a homemaker. As a child, George told his family
that he didn't want to be a minister. In 1967, his father took
over the pastorate of a broken-down inner city church in Worcester,
Massachusetts that was being housed in a nineteenth century former
Salvation Army building.
For
five years during the 1970's, George and his family lived in a
makeshift apartment in the back of the church. As part of their
evangelism efforts, the basement of the church was converted into
a Friday night coffeehouse for youth. During the summers, his
family borrowed a company van from George's grandfather and would
camp out on Cape Cod passing out tracks to hippies during the
week, and on the weekends hold evangelism rallies on the beach
and in rented town halls.
In
1979, George spent his entire life savings to be part of a mission
trip to the country of Haiti. In January of 1983, his family moved
to Haiti with tents to start a mission on five acres of beachfront
property purchased for seven thousand dollars. After twenty years,
his family is still living in the country of Haiti.
George
met his wife, Paula, in Haiti while she was serving as a missionary.
They reside in Orlando, FL with their children, Michael and Julianne.
George's
passion is for the country of Haiti to find hope in God. His desire
is that his photographs will inspire others to work with him in
an effort to change the lives and hearts of the Haitian people.
George's
other books on Haiti are available at George
DeTellis.com.
